I’ve had various preamp/EQ units from Pendulum and Rane, but I’ll likely be getting a Grace Felix preamp, which has two channels so I’ll be able to have both guitars at the ready with separate EQ. I run that through a preamp/EQ, where I boost some sweet-spot bottom frequencies and narrowly notch the midrange where necessary. It’s very natural-sounding and has a switch for 12 versions of the tone. For quieter acoustic gigs, I use the Sexauer with a James May Ultra Tonic soundboard transducer. I’ve gone through many variations of my rig over the years. It is, and I use two guitars for live shows – the Sexauer and an Oneida, built by Eric Aceto and Dan Hoffman around 1990. Reproducing good acoustic tone in concert is always difficult. For some music, I find standard tuning to be best. I very often also tune my B to C, and sometimes, A to G. For tunings, I use a few variations, but my foundation is double-dropped Ds, where both E strings are tuned to D. It’s a 14-fret cutaway with pernambuco back and sides, and a German-spruce top. Which guitar did you use on the new album?Ī Sexauer JB-16, which is a lovely creature built by Bruce Sexauer. I learned a lot about playing with sensitivity, and saying something, from the piano. I’d say my playing is influenced by piano players and composers, especially from the baroque and classical periods, and some jazz composers. But until you just asked, I don’t think I ever really analyzed the piano’s specific impact on my guitar playing. I play piano – and have my whole life – so the influence is literal. “Laughing Water” unfolds like a piano piece, with its cascading arpeggios and harmonic structure. That helped me find ways to fluidly play the same bass line and accompaniment at various positions on the neck. They often weave layers together in an incredibly sophisticated rhythmic fabric, playing a bass line, improvising, and playing melodies on top of that. Playing with kora players from Mali has especially influenced my playing. It viscerally inspired me to explore a range of palm-muting tones I ride the saddle of the guitar and pluck strings with a lot of strength. The simultaneously resonant and muted tones of the kamale ngoni – a hunter’s harp. It felt natural to my musical sensibilities, and at the same time was mysterious and challenging.Īre there specific African instruments that inspired you? All of the music excited me, especially the stringed music from West Africa with its all-out expressiveness and polyrhythms. This really opened my interest in music and culture and the ways different peoples have developed to express their human experience and sense of community. When I was in college, I discovered music from West Africa, Cuba, the British Isles, North Africa, and Bulgaria. Other times, it sounds like a kora or thumb piano. On “Zamora,” your guitar sometimes sounds like an oud. There are also fingerstyle influences, like Martin Simpson, John Renbourn, Alex de Grassi, and Bruce Cockburn. In my late teens, I was really impacted by the sensitivity and virtuosity of classical guitarist Christopher Parkening’s album Parkening Plays Bach. Earlier guitar influences were folky, like James Taylor and Stephen Stills. I had some early guitar influences, but my biggest are players of other instruments, piano, and particularly the African kora and kamale ngoni. Once I started collaborating with stringed instrumentalists from West Africa and rendering my own versions of that music on guitar, my right-hand technique became more ambitious and complex. Somewhere in my teens, I discovered a quirky cross-picking technique, which now I’d say was vaguely akin to Scruggs-style banjo playing, though a bit of a hybrid with a lot being covered by the thumb. I started fingerpicking when I was a child, probably when I was eight years old. Your picking technique is extraordinary – it’s so percussive. Here, he discusses his uncanny acoustic approach. Strauss melds melodic compositions, polyrhythms inspired by African music, and that rippling, visceral picking. West Coast fingerstylist Walter Strauss has a remarkable picking technique – powerful and surprisingly percussive – as heard on his latest release, For Melody, Wherever She May Find Me. You’ll own a couple but the rest will be owned by rival companies – so you’ll need to make enough money in order to purchase the land, build your own hotels and make even more money. You’ll start out only able to build simple campsites, but will quickly unlock larger structures like motels, guest houses and eventually skyscrapers capable of generating significantly more funds.Ĭonstruction comes down to a careful thinking exercise in resource management. You’ll need sufficient resources to build on the land (purchased with money) and you’ll also need the requisite number of workers (extras can be trained but you’ll need to pay their wages which aren’t cheap). You’ll also have to keep an eye on the upkeep of your existing structures – if they fall into disrepair you won’t get any funds from them, meaning you’ll have to spend (you guessed it) resources and workers fixing them. In order to help Lynette achieve her goal of buying back The Golden Company, you need to progress through a series of levels all of which have the objective of building up an empire of hotels. You’ll be given separate targets in each one – some might require you to bank a certain amount of money, others might ask you to renovate a local historical structure and attract a certain number of guests to the area etc. Achieving these tasks will require savvy business skills but the levels also play out slightly like a puzzle, in that there are effective ways to pull off early strategies and figuring these out might require a few restarts.Įach new area begins on a new map with a number of plots of land that can be developed. Gameplay in Hotel Mogul is a mix of minor city building elements, business simulation and puzzle game – and it’s very addictive, if a little same-y after a while. There’s some upbeat but repetitive background music here but otherwise the game is fairly bland in the sound department – you’re going to want to listen to something else in the background. Things like menus are big and bright, feeling like they’d benefit from touchscreen controls (which of course aren’t available on PSP) and there’s just a general fun, light-hearted vibe to everything. There is a limit to how much you can do with a small-scale neighbourhood builder – Hotel Mogul makes the most of this, taking you to a variety of locations to build up your empire including desert canyons and lush green oases, but there’s a limit to what the varied background elements can do to make the rather samey graphics feel different. Sure, the models look like they’re made of play-dough and there’s hardly anything new or exciting here, but it provides some nice back-story for what you’re doing building all these hotels and it all unfolds at a solid pace – giving just enough incentive for you to keep pushing forward.īearing all the hallmarks of a mobile title (which of course it is), Hotel Mogul is hardly a looker but it gets the job done. Hotel Mogul follows Lynette, a businesswoman with big ambitions – yet when she discovers her husband Barry has run away with another woman named Mindy (a nice nod to Friends for people my age), she vows to buy the company she invested her life in back before it’s sold at auction.įor a small-scale simulation game launched through PS Minis, there’s a surprising amount of story in Hotel Mogul told through simple but effective conversation stills. If that's the case, you'll need an HDMI adapter to connect the screen to your dock - yet another thing you might have to buy. (You could also link up a Bluetooth speaker if you have one of those handy.) And while we're talking about monitors, there's a decent chance the spare displays in your home use VGA or DVI connections. Here's hoping the monitor you connect to the DeX dock has built-in speakers or a headphone jack of its own. Audio is routed through the S8's speaker by default, which gets the job done, but anyone planning to spend a lot of time in front of a DeX desktop will want something better. Just remember to pair them before you dock - otherwise you'll be stuck with a pretty desktop and no way to use it.įor most, the biggest omission is a headphone jack, because the phone's speaker is blocked when docked. You can connect a wired keyboard and mouse, but the more elegant solution is to use a pair of Bluetooth ones. There's the DeX dock ($150) to start, which has most of the requisite connections - an HDMI-out port, an ethernet jack and two full-size USB ports. If you want to turn the S8 or S8 Plus into a PC, you're going to need a bunch of extra parts. Unfortunately, as impressive as DeX can be, the answer for most people is a big ol' "no." The real question now isn't about how feasible the idea is, it's whether anyone should bother. And yet, here we are - the Galaxy S8 doubles as a surprisingly respectable PC. Just look at Motorola's Atrix or Microsoft's Continuum or any of the startups languishing on Kickstarter. After all, this isn't a new idea.Ĭompanies have tried - and mostly failed - to make smartphones work like PCs for years now. In fact, the me from three or four years ago would've done the same. Ten-year-old me would be losing it if he saw this. The kicker: It's far better than I dared expect. I'm writing this on a Galaxy S8 Plus - a metal-and-glass slab I just pulled out of my pocket - connected to a monitor, keyboard and mouse with Samsung's new DeX dock. The decade and change that followed brought staggering leaps in performance and huge reductions in size. It was ugly and slow, even by 1998 standards, but it (somehow) got the job done. My family's first computer was a boxy, squat Tatung with an AMD K2, a handful of RAM and a 4GB hard drive. There is a distinct hint of musical satire about Crumblin’ Erb. On the surface, Elevators is just a hymn to their early success (André punctures the celebratory mood by suggesting he is still broke), but the music is unsettlingly odd: weird, scattered electronic bleeps, a chorus that sounds like something from a musical in which the entire cast is off their heads. Things got strange fast in Outkast’s world. The beat – based on the Five Stairsteps’ 1967 hit Danger She’s a Stranger – fits the brooding mood perfectly. Two Dope Boyz (In a Cadillac) (1996)Ī track that revels in Outkast’s outsider status within hip-hop – “greetings Earthlings!” – with the cool confidence of people who know they have the talent to back the boast they are not just different, but better. In which Big Boi and André wittily cordon off a beautiful but cash-obsessed lady: “One of them freaks who gets geeked at the sight of an ATM receipt.” The way it turns the profoundly unpromising phrase “roses really smell like poo” into an unshakeable earworm and a global hit single is – sorry – not to be sniffed at. André’s verse pours scorn on gangsta rap – then resurgent thanks to the cliche-ridden platinum-seller Master P – and offering “time travellin’, rhyme javelin, something mind-unravellin’” as an alternative. Return of the G (1998)Ī bold statement of artistic intent in the face of criticism, Return of the G’s title is a double bluff. Outkast at the Grammys in 2004, where they won three awards, including album of the year. An explosion of fantastic melodic hooks and deft rapping, featuring an early guest appearance by Janelle Monáe and powered by the marching band mentioned in its chorus, it should have been a huge hit. The soundtrack to an unloved film, Idlewild was released to a decidedly mixed reception, but Morris Brown is an under-appreciated delight. Production is by Organized Noize, with guest appearances from Goodie Mob’s Big Gipp and Cee-Lo Green, the latter entirely consuming the first third of the track. Git Up, Git Out (1994)Ī seven-and-a-half-minute-long, supremely funky and conscious-rhyme-laden introduction to the Dungeon Family, or at least part of said sprawling crew. The ferocious, distorted synths, frantic beats and soul interludes of GhettoMusick proved his partner didn’t have the monopoly on thrilling experimentation. GhettoMusick (2003)īig Boi’s album in the split Speakerboxx/Love Below double set was overshadowed by André’s – home to Hey Ya! and Roses – but its highlights were vertiginous. They would also ensure that you are comfortable before and after the TESA procedure. Consult your specialist he or she will walk you through the process. Anesthetic agents may induce vomiting, nausea, and other symptoms on the treatment day, but these symptoms typically go away after six to eight hours.ĭo not be worried about the pain if you are considering TESA. Though they are uncommon, anesthesia’s side effects are well-known, and you should always be aware of them. There are no long-term adverse effects from the treatment. Now that you have learned about the benefits, let us see if the treatment has any drawbacks. You do not require extensive preparation before the treatment. It is a non-surgical sperm retrievaltechnique. The below are some of the benefits of TESA. Now that you know that TESA is painful let us look at some of the advantages of getting it done. TESA has proven to be very beneficial in treating male infertility. After a week, you can return to your normal routine and perform all activities, including exercising, lifting weights, and so on. After that, you should avoid carrying heavy weights for about a week. The doctor will advise you to relax on the day of the treatment. Also, your doctor might prescribe pain relievers for a day or two. There will be some discomfort and swelling around the injection site, which may feel like a pinprick. Moreover, you do not have to stay in the hospital after the procedure. It is performed under local anesthesia or sedation. TESA can cause some discomfort for a few days, but it is not a painful treatment. There is even a risk that the cause of your infertility could affect your child as well. There are several theories and questions about the use of genetic material to create sperm cells. If TESA does not produce enough sperm, you will need a testicular biopsy. Since your testicular sperm are immature, you will need ICSI, which involves extracting just one sperm from your blood and injecting it directly into the egg. To fertilize an egg, the sperm cells do not need to be mature and pass across the epididymis. In the embryology lab, the sample is analysed to extract the sperm cells. The tissue and semen are aspirated using negative pressure. After that, a needle is inserted into the testis. Ideally, production occurs around 93.2✯, which is about 5✯ below normal body temperature. The specialist will begin by giving you anesthesia. production, known as spermatogenesis, is a process that’s sensitive to heat. TESA is very effective, but most people in Mumbai are concerned about the pain.īefore we look at whether TESA is painful, let us look at how it is done. Your specialist will suggest TESA if you have non-obstructive azoospermia, which means you cannot get sperm from your epididymis. In these conditions, TESA is proving to be a game-changer in extracting sperm directly from the testis. Infertility can be hindered by sperm production that is too poor. When the sperms get blocked from accessing the semen, this is known as obstructive azoospermia. If the testicles are not producing enough sperm or if you have non-obstructive azoospermia.Your IVF clinic will advise you to undergo a surgical sperm extraction procedure: Your sperms are drawn from your testis or epididymis during these procedures. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) through TESA has enabled many azoospermic men to become biological fathers in recent years. TESA is now easily available at an IVF centre in Mumbai. However, due to advancements in ART techniques, TESA has become an accessible option to many men. Reconstructive surgery or donor insemination were historically the only methods for treating azoospermia. Males with azoospermia can benefit from this treatment.Īzoospermia is a disorder in which there is not enough sperm in the ejaculate.
